Afternoon tea – quintessential British!

Afternoontea

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”
Henry James

Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, introduced afternoon tea in England in the year 1840. History is that the Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal aka dinner in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock. Finding herself understandably peckish in the gap between lunch and dinner, the Duchess began inviting her friends to enjoy tea and ‘light refreshments’ in her rooms at Woburn Abbey. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

This pause for tea became a fashionable social event called the “Afternoon Tea”. Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches (including of course thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches), scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Cakes and pastries are also served. Tea grown in India or Ceylon is poured from silver teapots into delicate bone china cups.

Nearly 200 years after the Duchess of Bedford’s innovation, sitting down to afternoon tea remains a byword for girlfriends all over the world.

Apparently in Britain, “Tea rooms” were all the rage in the late 19th Century – quickly becoming THE place for meeting friends and sharing gossip. They were considered one of the few respectable places for women to meet without a chaperone, so the out-of-home Afternoon Tea took off like a social network.

Back to the modern present, we invite all ladies young and mature to come share a cup of chai and house made treats during our afternoon chai sessions. Biscotts is the perfect place to meet and greet, socialize and celebrate food. A sip of chai and pleasantries go a long way.

Let’s Go Brunch, London style!

Letsgobrunch

We’ve always been open about our love of all things London, especially when it comes to the dining out scene.

London being the buzzing metropolitan it is where people run through hectic schedules over the week, weekends are always reserved for family and rest. Needless to say most of London wakes up to a relaxed Saturday and Sunday. Weekend Brunch attracts Londoners with their family, kids and pets to the hundreds of chai/coffee bars that cover the length and breadth of the city.

Fancy a little London culture with your cuppa? Well here’s the spot.

At Biscotts we strive to bring this London culture to our very own South Jordan and Salt Lake City. We envision people walking in relaxed with their family and children and enjoying our weekend brunch specials and delectable spread of global cuisine with their favorite cuppa Chai or Coffee. A modest yet modern bruncherie, we want our shop to preserve its charm of being the weekend go to spot- the best kept secret in town.

Our food is not just mouthwatering but healthy too, well balanced but not at all gimmicky. We want everything to be interesting with a quirky flare and hence you will find dishes like Chicken Adobo Wrap with Mint Cucumber Sauce, Ancient Oatmeal with Flaxseed and Amaranth, Green Goddess Smoothie and so on and so forth on our globally inspired menu.

We’ve made the décor bright and cheery, a bit like our personalities, we must admit. Just a few tables, small bar with high stools, exposed globe lightbulb fixtures and barn wood lined walls and counters. The vertical line of pastry cases, with cakes and other yummy delicious goods acts as a central axis and hub of the venue. Simply put, it’s the sort of place you go because you know the place is charismatic; food is unpretentious, tasty, affordable and honest. That’s Biscotts in a nutshell for you!
